This is Columbia’s dazzling River of Five Colors or Caño Cristales, known by many as ‘the river that ran away from paradise’ and ‘the most beautiful river in the world.’
Located in the Sierra de la Macarena, this is a unique biological wonder that originating in the south of the mountain chain Macarena, Columbia, flowing eastward to its confluence with the Guayabero river. For most of the year it is similar to many other rivers around the world: a bed of rocks covered in dull green mosses are seen below a cool, clear current.
What is amazing about the river is that for a very short period of time every year, between wet and dry seasons, it blossoms in a vibrant explosion of colors, including shades of yellow, red, green, blue and black that, depending on time of year, can be weakened or strengthened. The Macarenia clavigera, a plant that lines the river floor, turns a brilliant shade of red that is only complemented by radiant shades of yellow and green sand, blue water and many other hues in the color spectrum.
During rainy season, the level of water increases considerably, making it quite difficult to spot algae, while in dry seasons, the plants are too shallow displaying only couple of dull colors like brown and green. Along with bright, multicolored gushes of the river, visitors will also admire the beauty of a remarkable waterfall.
Visiting Columbia’s River of Five Colors is a truly amazing experience that is sure to leave an everlasting, interminable impression on the visitor’s mind. There are no roads leading to this river, so adventurists must make their way either on foot or by riding a horse, which will make the tour more exciting. Another way to see this great natural wonder is through an aircraft; a view of this multi-hued river from an altitude of over 100 feet is simply exceptional.
